For many three olds, the preschool experience can be a new and exciting time of life.  It can be met with apprehension as well as enthusiasm.  The goal is for all children to feel loved, valuable, and competent, and to learn and trust others.  

 

3 Year Old Program Curriculum

 
 

For many three olds, the preschool experience can be a new and exciting time of life.  It can be met with apprehension as well as enthusiasm.  The goal is for all children to feel loved, valuable, and competent, and to learn and trust others.  The Three-Year-Old classroom offers a wealth of experiences that enhances the following goals:

  1. Developing each child’s positive self-image and sense of independence.
  2. Developing each child’s ability to interact in a group.
  3. Furthering each child’s cognitive growth and curiosity.
  4. Nurturing a developing awareness of the world around us
  5. Encouraging the development of each child’s creative abilities

These goals are reached through a consideration of the four areas in which a child grows:  emotional, social, cognitive and physical. The children learn through exploration, discovery and play; progressing from parallel play to cooperative play.  The Three-Year- Old curriculum includes non-directed activities, where children make choices from the classroom setting, and directed activities, where individual and small group instruction help to foster learning skills and tasks.

We plan for the following areas of a child’s development

Social/Emotional Development

  •  Plays in groups of 2 to 3 children
  •  Begins to take turns
  •  Share with friends
  •  Accept one’s feelings and express those feelings in appropriate ways
  •  Enjoys independence by doing things for themselves
  •  Uses words to describe personal feelings

Language and Speech Development

  •  Increase the ability to communicate by developing listening skills, increasing vocabulary, and expressing ideas.
  •  Develop an interest in literature and the ability to recall sequence, understand content and predict outcome of simple stories.
  • Beginning to recognize name in print
  • Develop beginning phonics and word skills
  • Identifying letters of the alphabet and beginning sounds
  • Beginning to recognize numbers
  • Differentiate between numbers and letters and letters and words
  • Asks how, what, when, and why questions
  • Answers how, what, when, and why questions
  •  Repeats poems, finger plays, and songs

 

Cognitive Skills are introduced throughout the day through games, books, songs, and other interactive centers.  Small and large group experiences are designed to introduce and reinforce these skills.

  • Recognizes basic shapes and colors
  • Develop longer attention span (listen 10-15 minutes in group setting)
  • Follows two -three part directions
  • Stays on task for 5-10 minutes
  • Beginning recognition of upper and lower case letters
  • Counts to 10 by rote
  • Count to tell the number of objects
  • Use one-to-one correspondence when counting to 10
  • Beginning recognition of numerals, 1-10
  • Develop concepts of matching, comparing, classifying, and ordering objects
  • Visual memory
  • Copies simple patterns
  • Begin to develop a concept of time and sequence by following a daily schedule

 

Spiritual Development

  • Bible stories and songs
  • Learning about God’s love
  • Developing obedience
  • Living Christian values
  • Attending Chapel Sessions offered by Youth Minister

 

Physical Development

Fine Motor Skills – Develop eye-hand coordination and the control of small muscles through the following activities:

  • Painting, coloring
  • Gluing
  • Pouring
  • Rolls and shapes play dough forms
  • Builds a nine to twelve block tower
  • Strings beads
  • Uses scissors to cut across a strip of paper
  • Puzzles
  • Imitates drawing a circle, vertical and horizontal line
  • Uses fingers to pick up small objects
  • Begins to practice writing name in upper case letters  

Large Motor Skills – Develop coordination of large muscles

  • Runs, walks, hops, jumps, skips, and climbs
  • Develop ability to throw and catch
  • Ride trikes or other ride on toys
  • Walks on balance beam
  • Walks up stairs with alternating feet
  • Bean bag games and activities 

 

Creative Expressions is an integral part of a child’s day in preschool.  Children learn to use imagination through role playing in a dramatic play area, by creating with blocks, puppets and other small manipulative toys.  Music gives children a chance to learn about the world through singing, dancing, listening, and playing instruments.

  • Participate in teacher- guided music and movement activities
  • Explore rhythm instruments and use them as intended
  • Use a variety of props (bean bags, scarves, ribbons) to enhance movement activities
  • Participate in teacher-guided visual art activities using a variety of materials (chalk, paint, crayons, markers, play dough)
  • Draw a self portrait
