Four Year Old Pre-K Program Curriculum
The Four Year Old Pre-K program is filled with activities that are designed to encourage individual and spiritual growth, confidence, and creativity. Your child’s experiences in preschool will have a great deal to do with the shaping of his/her educational growth. The habits and attitude your child has toward school are rooted in these first years in school. This program will encourage children to feel confident enough to think for themselves, cooperate with others and share ideas.
Our learning environment will be one that encourages active participation on the part of the child.
Children will learn as they explore, observe and interact with each other
Children will be encouraged to express themselves through art, writing, music, and movement • Our curriculum will help to build important foundations for language and reading skills as well as all kindergarten pursuits.
Readiness skills we will include:
Expressing self appropriately
Take care of personal needs
Playing cooperatively with others
Appropriate play with more than one other child
Develop ability to listen-increase attention span
Encourage independent work
Interest in learning
Recognize patterns of colors and shapes
Identify letters(will practice writing upper and lower case letters)
Associate letters with sounds
Identify numbers (practice writing numbers to 10)
State first and last name, age and birthday, address and phone number
Use complete sentences
Retell an event or story (sequencing)
Take appropriate turns in conversation
Answer questions about a story read aloud
In addition we will provide activities that further develop major language skills and concepts by working on:
Left to right progression
Bible stories and songs
Learning about God’s love
Living Christian values
FINE MOTOR SKILLS
Control of crayon, marker, pencil, with proper hold
Cut with scissors
Write first name using upper case letters
Build with blocks
Using glue and art materials
Other manipulative toys
GROSS MOTOR SKILLS
Run, jump, skip, hop, throw
Bean bag activities
Engage in finger plays, songs and poems •Use of many art mediums
Express oneself through music, art, storytelling, and dramatic play
Math for young children must be concrete and filled with play and exploration. It is important that young children truly understand foundation concepts before moving on to more abstract operations like addition and subtraction. There is a developmental sequence for teaching math we will follow. Children need to internalize each skill and build on the preceding skill:
Classification – Grouping, sorting into categories
Patterning – creating repetitions of symbols or objects
One-to-One Correspondence – pairing or matching items to objects
Ordering and Sequencing – smallest to largest, lightest to heaviest
Numeration – ability to recognize numerals and place a correct numeral with a given set of objects
These math concepts will be addressed throughout the year using games and various activities. Math and counting will be learned in the meaningful context of everyday experiences.
PRE-K EXTENDED DAY ENRICHMENT CLASSES
Pre-K Extended Day Enrichment Classes will be available to the children who are enrolled in the morning Pre-K 3 day and 5 day classes. This program will be offered Monday through Thursday from 11:30 am - 2:00 pm.
This extra time at preschool emphasizes socialization skills while the children participate in entertaining group activities such as “Soccer Shots”, Yoga, “Hola Espanol”, Music, and Art Enrichment.
In addition there will be class time when fun themes will be introduced which will allow more time to be spent on: language arts, science, math, and project-based learning activities. The activities developed for this program are creative, hands on, and interactive.
